Functional Outcomes After Five Years Among Men Receiving Radiotherapy for Localized Prostate Cancer
Objectives:
Previously we reported on the urinary, bowel, and sexual outcomes at 2 years after
diagnosis of the men in PCOS who received external beam therapy. The goal of this paper
is to assess these outcome measures at 5 years after diagnosis and also include men
receiving implants as well as radiation therapy with hormones.
Rationale:
Few studies have been able to look at long term outcomes after radiation therapy in a
population based study such as PCOS. This will provide important information to men who
want to know long term effects of radiation therapy.
Data:
We will utilize the 6 month, 12 month, 24 month, and 5 years patient surveys, the
initial SEER data, and the 12 month abstract file.
Methods:
Using SUDAAN, we will provide weighted distributions of responses to the specific
functional outcome questions at each time point and differences between type of therapy
(i.e. external beam, implants, and radiation plus hormone therapy) at each time point will
be assessed using Generalized Estimating Equations, adjusting for pre-treatment function,
age at diagnosis, secondary treatment, and other confounders. An adjusted summary score
for each functional domain will be calculated for each time period using least squares
regression.
Dissemination:
Results will be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal.
Target Schedule:
Completion: Fall 2004
