Section on Molecular Biophysics
Head: Vozken A. Parsegian
This Section examines the organization of molecular assemblies. Its current purview includes: DNA/protein complexes, DNA/lipid assemblies, DNA assemblies such as are seen in viral capsids and in vitro, lipid/water systems, telomeric DNA analogs, polypeptides and polysaccharides. In all these systems, we measure intermolecular forces or interaction energies. A primary goal is to characterize and codify measured forces in such a way as to be used in computation. Our undertaking is strengthened by its strong foundation in physical theory, in particular statistical mechanics applied to liquid crystals and to complex fluids.
