Overview

The National Institutes of Health is the nation's medical research agency. Education and training in clinical research are important components of the NIH mission. The Clinical Research Training Program features clinical teaching rounds at the NIH Clinical Center. Medical and dental students who come to NIH for the annual Clinical Investigator Student Trainee Forum are at a pivotal time in their careers. The Clinical Center is the National Institutes of Health's clinical research hospital and the world's largest devoted exclusively to clinical research. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center’s Office of Clinical Research Training and Medical Education (OCRTME) develops, administers, and evaluates a comprehensive portfolio of clinical research training and medical education initiatives. The Office centralizes many of the existing research training and medical education functions and emphasizes the NIH commitment to developing a cadre of well-trained and highly skilled physician-scientists. These include programs for medical and dental students, residents and fellows, and the full range of health-care professionals engaged in the clinical and research missions of the NIH and the Clinical Center.

These programs and services aimed at educating about and improving the conduct of clinical and translational research, are available in the Clinical Center on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland, which is the institutional site for our student and graduate medical education programs. In addition, courses offered by this office are available on the NIH campus and to the clinical research community worldwide through long-distance learning mechanisms.

This office is directed by Dr. Frederick P. Ognibene, who is assisted by a professional team of 14 who are experts in the administration of these educational programs and courses. Dr. Ognibene has stated, “it is incumbent upon us to do this because it is part of the Clinical Center's mission to ensure that investigators are properly trained in these principles in a comprehensive and ethically-sound manner."
