Clinical Research Training Program for Medical and Dental Students

The Clinical Research Training Program (CRTP) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is designed for highly qualified, research-oriented medical or dental students interested in the principles and practice of clinical investigation. Selected participants, known as fellows, spend 12 months in residence on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland learning about clinical research design, data analysis, bioethics, and critical review of medical literature, while conducting mentored clinical or translational research in an area that matches their academic interests and career goals. A major learning focus is translational research, that first step from the bench to the bedside and back.

CRTP fellows develop individualized learning plans under the direction of internationally renowned NIH clinician-scientists. Learning is facilitated by working with principal investigators on selected projects in our intramural laboratories.  Fellows augment their laboratory experience through interactive group discussions with peers, and by attending outpatient clinics and seeing patients enrolled in investigational protocols on the wards of the NIH Clinical Center, the world’s largest hospital devoted to human subject research.
