Section on Developmental Biology

Head: Igor B. Dawid

The molecular basis of vertebrate embryogenesis is being studied in Xenopus and in the zebrafish. A broad project has been initiated to isolate developmentally regulated cDNAs from a normalized library of zebrafish embryos on the basis of their expression patterns during development. Radiation hybrid mapping is being used to place these cDNAs on the zebrafish genomic map. The characterization of a set of cDNAs is a step towards generating a molecular anatomical atlas of zebrafish development. In addition, these cDNAs will provide candidate genes for the cloning of mutations and starting materials for studying regulatory mechanisms in embryogenesis. The specific pathways being studied include the Wnt and BMP signaling cascades, and homeodomain proteins as examples of developmentally important transcriptional regulatory factors.
