Mar 26, 2008 We have changed our name!  CARES is now CARES!

Since 1992, the Center for Agricultural, Resource and Environmental Systems has worked to further understanding of our world by using and promoting the use of information based decisions.  Our work has covered many topics, including agriculture, natural resources, and the environment, but also health, public policy, risk management, community issues, archeology, silviculture, childhood issues, and many more.  Typically, we work in a cooperative effort with others to provide improved information for analysis or decision making, applying our skills to better enable others to address issues.

Based on the true nature of our work over the past 16 years, we have adopted a new name:  the Center for Applied Research and Environmental Systems.  We feel the Applied Research better describes what we actually do.  Applied research has been defined as "designed to solve practical problems of the modern world, rather than to acquire knowledge for knowledge's sake. One might say that the goal of the applied scientist is to improve the human condition."1  This is very much in line with the work we have been doing at CARES, and will continue to do in the future.

Best of all, the name fits within our existing acronym, so you can continue to refer to CARES as CARES!  Look for changes to our web site in the coming weeks!

Feb 28, 2008 Bryan Mayhan has been promoted to Assistant Director of CARES.

Bryan's promotion is in recognition to his contributions to soil science, both in Missouri and nationally. Bryan has also been very successful in securing support for multiple staff, and managing all of our soils related projects. This promotion will, in part, allow Bryan to serve as Principal Investigator for those projects, a role which he has been already effectively filling. The promotion is also in recognition of eleven years of outstanding contributions to CARES projects and mission.

Aside from the new responsibilities as Principal Investigator, Bryan's duties will remain largely as they have been in the recent past. He will continue to head the CARES Soils Program, representing CARES and the University of Missouri in various state and national soil committees and activities, and direct the staff assigned to the soils projects.

Congratulations Bryan!
