Project Description
The Siteman Cancer Center's Program for the Elimination of Cancer Disparities (PECaD) at Washington University1 is a multidisciplinary, community-focused program designed to eliminate pervasive disparities in cancer education, prevention, and treatment. The project's objectives include developing a core organizational infrastructure within the Cancer Center and establishing a staff of multidisciplinary professionals and community members to support community-based participatory activities by: (1) enhancing existing relationships and building new partnerships with communities affected by cancer health disparities and with other organizations engaged in reducing cancer health disparities within those communities; (2) forming and strengthening collaborations with other NCI-supported programs that address cancer health disparities; (3) increasing utilization of beneficial interventions to reduce cancer health disparities; (4) increasing community participation in primary and secondary prevention activities; (5) identifying specific barriers to proportional accrual in clinical research studies; and (6) developing training programs to promote disparities-focused research.
