[1] Due to survey methodology changes in 1999, comparisons to results prior to 1999 must be limited. The survey's name was changed from the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse (NHSDA) to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) in 2002. Each NSDUH respondent beginning in 2002 is given an incentive payment of $30, resulting in a substantial improvement in the survey response rate.

[2] Categories for other racial/ethnic groups and non-Hispanic more than one race (introduced since 1999) are not included.

[3] Data on adult education are not applicable for youth age 12–17. Total refers to adults age 18 and older.

[4] Data on current employment are not applicable for youth age 12–17. Total refers to adults age 18 and older.
