  • 12/13/2000: Weather Advisories
    During weather emergencies this page provides current information on the operating status of federal executive agencies inside the Washington Capital Beltway.
  • 11/16/2000: Flu Immunizations - "Foil the Flu"
    The Occupational Medical Service has received sufficient flu vaccine to begin the annual Foil the Flu program for NIH employees. As usual, on campus opportunities for immunization will be done based on the first letter of the employee's last name - the schedule can be found at: http://www.nih.gov/od/ors/ds/flu.html. After December 19, immunizations will be done only by appointment with OMS. Immunizations will be given only to NIH employees - bring your NIH ID card.
  • 11/15/2000: Combined Federal Campaign (CFC)
    The Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) is the annual fund-raising drive run by Federal employees in their workplace each fall. Federal employees and military personnel raise millions of dollars which benefit thousands of non-profit charities. It is the only authorized solicitation of employees in the Federal workplace on behalf of charitable organizations.
  • 11/14/2000: Federal Employees Health Benefits Plan
    The Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) open season begins November13 and will continue until December 11, 2000. During open season, any eligible employee who is not currently registered may enroll, and any eligible enrollee may change from one plan or option to another, from self only to self and family, or make a combination of these changes.
  • 11/14/2000: Thrift Savings Plan Open Season
    The Thrift Savings Plan is having another open season from Nov. 15, 2000, through Jan. 31, 2001. More detailed information is provided in the Summary of the Thrift Savings Plan for Federal Employees booklet and is available in your IC personnel office.
  • 11/1/2000: Health Benefits Fair, Nov. 7
    In conjunction with the 2000 Federal Employees Health Benefits Program open season, which runs from Monday, Nov. 13 through Monday, Dec. 11, the Retirement and Benefits Service Center is sponsoring a Health Benefits Open Season Fair. The fair will be held in Bldg. 1's Wilson Hall (3rd floor), on Tuesday, Nov. 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Representatives from most of the plans that are available to NIH employees will be on hand to answer employee questions on their 2001 benefits.
  • 11/1/2000: Employee Flu Shot Program Delayed
    There will be a delay in this year's NIH "Foil the Flu" vaccination campaign due to vaccine shortages. Watch the Occupational Medical Service site at http://www.nih.gov/od/ors/ds/flu.html for updates on availability.
  • 10/17/2000: Renewal of NIH Parking Permits
    NIH General Parking Permits for campus employees whose last names begin with U, V, W, X, Y and Z will expire on the last day of November 2000. To get a new permit, an employee must visit the NIH Parking Office in Bldg. 31, Rm. B3B04. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Remember to bring a valid NIH identification card, driver's license and vehicle registration certificate. For more information, call 496-6851.
  • 10/17/2000: Mobile Mammography Screening at NIH
    The Mobile Mammography Screening at NIH will start on October 18, 2000. All NIH employees, their families, and others associated with NIH (such as IRTAs, visiting scientists, contractors, volunteers) are eligible to participate. If you or a family member is interested in scheduling an appointment, call (202) 994-9999. An appointment clerk from GWU Breast Cancer Center will schedule your appointment.
  • 10/13/2000: Ability You Can Count On Resource & Services Fair

  • 9/18/2000: Hispanic Heritage Month Observance
    NIH's observance of Hispanic Heritage Month continues in October with a morning symposium titled, "¡Salud! To Your Health - Bridging the Gap in Health Disparities," on Wednesday, Oct. 4 in Bldg. 10's Lipsett Amphitheater and Visitor Information Center.   • 9/18/2000: Renewal of Carpool Permits
    NIH carpool parking permits expire on the last day of October 2000. To get a new one, each member of the pool must appear together at the NIH Parking Office in Bldg. 31, Rm. B3B04. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Carpool permits can also be obtained Oct. 11 at EPN, Conf. Rm. C, from 1 to 2:30 p.m., and Oct. 18 at Rockledge II, Conf. Rm. 9104, from 1 to 2:30 p.m.
  • 9/18/2000: Fair Addresses Quality of Work Life
    On Thursday, Oct. 5, the NIH quality of work life committee is sponsoring a resource fair, "Real People, Real Choices: Quality of Work Life at NIH." The fair, held in Bldg. 10's Visitor Information Center (lower level exhibit area) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., will provide an opportunity to learn more about employee services.   • 9/18/2000: CFC Kickoff
    NIH Combined Federal Campaign deputy coordinators and keyworkers are invited to attend the annual CFC kickoff at 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 3, on the patio behind Bldg. 31A. A highlight of the event will be "Tree House," a puppet show (for adults) about goal-setting by the Blue Sky Puppet Theater.   • 9/18/2000: Community Health Forum
    The NIH Office of Community Liaison will hold its third annual community health forum, Share the Health: An Exposition of Health Resources from NIH to Its Neighbors. The event, which features free health-related information, lectures and screenings, will be held on Saturday, Oct. 21 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Natcher Conference Center.   • 9/6/2000: Fire Safety Awareness Day
    On Tuesday, September 12, 2000 Fire Safety Awareness Day will be held in front of Building One between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Food will be catered by O'Brien's Pit Barbecue and Ben and Jerry's Homemade Ice Cream.
  • 8/1/2000: FAES Announces Fall Courses
    The FAES Graduate School at NIH announces the schedule of courses for the fall semester. The evening classes sponsored by the Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences will be given on the NIH campus. Classes will begin Sept. 18; mail registration ends Aug. 31 and walk-in registration will be held Sept. 6-12. Schedules will be available in the graduate school office in Bldg. 60, Suite 230, the foundation bookstore in Bldg. 10, Rm. B1L101, and the business office in Bldg. 10, Rm. B1C18.   • 8/1/2000: Fire Prevention Slogans Sought
    The Emergency Management Branch, Division of Public Safety, is now accepting slogans for NIH's observance of National Fire Prevention Week. If you win the contest, open to everyone (except members of EMB and their immediate family), your idea and your name will appear on next year's posters. You can enter as often as you like. Previous slogans include "Smoke - Silent and Deadly," and "Watch What You Heat." Be sure to print (legibly) or type your slogan on a sheet of white paper. If you submit multiple candidates, rank them in order of preference. Entries are due by Sept. 1. Send or fax entries to the fire prevention section (attention: J.P. McCabe), Bldg. 15G, Rm. 2.   • 6/27/2000: NIH IntraMall 2000 Celebratation
    Celebrate IntraMall 2000 in an air-conditioned tent with free food and giveaways. BioSpace.com will host the NIH IntraMall 2000 tent show Wednesday, July 12, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., in parking lot 10-D, on the north side of the Clinical Center. The event will highlight recent NIH IntraMall enhancements and key vendors. Learn more about the new and improved IntraMall, the leading electronic catalog and ordering system on the NIH campus. The leading web site for life sciences content and supplies, BioSpace.com has integrated life sciences content with catalogs in the IntraMall (intramall.nih.gov).

  • 6/14/2000: NIH Farmers Market Open Through October
    The NIH Farmers Market is open every Tuesday from 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM, rain or shine, from May 9th through late October. It's located in NIH parking lot # 41B, (near the tennis courts). Follow the signs from Wisconsin Ave.
  • 6/13/2000: New Cafeteria Operator, Eurest, Begins Wednesday, June 14
    Eurest Dining Services has been awarded a 10 year contract to provide food services at 6 campus cafeterias (Buildings 1,31, 35, 45, and 10 B1 and ACRF, including the Cyber Café Coffee Bars in the new Building 40 and in the Building 10 lobby).   • 6/13/2000: CIVIL Helps Manage Threat of Workplace Violence
    The NIH director recently established CIVIL, a resource to help the NIH community prevent and respond to workplace threats and violence. When there is immediate danger, always call the police first (dial 911 if on campus, 9-911, if off-campus). Call CIVIL when: you need help assessing the potential seriousness of a threatening situation; you are experiencing a threatening situation at work and need intervention from trained staff; you become aware of a workplace situation involving intimidating, harassing, or other unproductive/dangerous behaviors and need consultation; you need help in addressing your own aggressive reactions to a workplace situation; or a situation involving threats or aggressive acts already has occurred and you need assistance managing the aftermath.   • 6/13/2000: Free Skin Cancer Screening for Employees
    The National Cancer Institute and the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases are offering free skin cancer screenings to all NIH employees. People of color are encouraged to participate. The screenings are part of a research study to test photography as a way to diagnose skin disease. The 15-minute screening will take place on Thursday, June 22, Friday, June 23, and Monday, June 26 at the Clinical Center.   • 6/5/2000: Camp Fantastic Barbecue, June 13
    The annual Camp Fantastic Barbecue - to raise money and awareness for Camp Fantastic/Special Love Inc. - will be held on Tuesday, June 13 on the Bldg. 31 patio. Outback Steakhouse will be providing food again this year, and there will be a band, and various raffles.   • 5/9/2000: NIH Savings Bond Drive - May 5 to June 30, 2000
    The National Institute of General Medical Sciences is hosting this year’s bonds campaign. This year, NIH staff have a special opportunity to save, thanks to the availability of the attractive new I bond.   • 5/2/2000: National Anxiety Disorders Screening Day - May 3, 2000
    The NIH Quality of Work Life (QWL) Committee is sponsoring anxiety disorders screening for NIH employees, with the support of the NIH Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and NIMH. If you have any questions or concerns about anxiety disorders, you are encouraged to attend the anonymous, confidential, walk-in screening. The screening will be held between 8 am and 4 pm at several locations both on and off-campus. Informational materials, including a guide to referral organizations, will also be available.   • 4/6/2000: NIH Take Your Child to Work Day
    NIH is sponsoring an educational opportunity for children during Take Your Child to Work Day on Thursday, Apr. 27. The purpose is to introduce children to the vital public services their parents provide and to encourage children to consider careers in medical research and the many supporting career fields. With approval of supervisors, employees may bring their children, ages 8 to 15, to participate in events from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day will include hands-on labs, workshops and demonstrations on fire prevention and public safety.   • 4/3/2000: National Alcohol Screening Day
    Thursday, April 6, 2000, is National Alcohol Screening Day. Are you concerned that a family member or friend drinks too much? Are other people concerned about how much you're drinking?   • 2/11/2000: Office of Communications and Public Liaison (OCPL) Web Site Launched
    Information about the staff, activities, and responsibilities of the NIH Office of Communications and Public Liaison (OCPL) can be accessed at this site. OCPL is the central office for communications at the National Institutes of Health. You will find a list of all the written and electronic resources provided by OCPL, which includes a contact point for each product and service. Our role in the area of Public Liaison concerns the public's interest and involvement with the social and policy issues affecting medical research on a national scale.

    The National Institutes of Health Alumni Association (NIHAA), now has a Web site that will assist alumni in maintaining ties with NIH.

    The OD Roster is now on-line, it includes the names of senior staff in the Office of the Director as well as the Institutes and Centers.

    Registration is now open (January 5 to 11) for the FAES Graduate School Spring 2000 semester. The Spring 2000 catalog is now available on line and can be downloaded from the FAES Home Page ( http://www.faes.org/). Classes will begin on January 24. For more information, call 301-496-7976.
