Abstract: (CIT): A number of new imaging methods make it possible to monitor and quantify molecular and cellular processes noninvasively in a variety of tissues. The radiotracer 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) is particularly useful for studying inflammatory processes via positron-emisson tomography (PET), because it is taken up at accelerated rates in foci of inflammation. In this lecture, Dr. Dan Schuster will describe the use of FDG-PET to visualize pulmonary inflammation in experimental studies in laboratory animals and human volunteers, and will discuss potential applications of such techniques to the investigation, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases.
