What is the purpose of the study?
To examine how smokers respond to things that might remind them of smoking after abstaining from smoking.

Who can participate in the study?
This study is accepting men and women who:

  • Are at least 18 years old
  • Smoke cigarettes regularly
  • Are in good health

What will participants be asked to do?
The study lasts up to 52 days.  Participants will:

  • Come to the research center every day for about 15 minutes
  • Provide urine and breath samples during each study visit
  • Abstain from smoking for an assigned number of days
  • Attend up to 3 two-hour study visits to view pictures, smell odors that remind them of smoking and measure how these affect mood and body

Where is the study taking place?
The NIDA Intramural Research Program is located on the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center campus in East Baltimore.

Will there be any cost to participate?
No, there is no charge for study-related medical care, including study visits and procedures.

Will I receive payment of some kind?
All study participants will be compensated for their time and travel.
