GFR MDRD Calculators for Adults (SI units)

In adults the best equation for estimating glomerular filtration rate (GFR) from serum creatinine is the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) Study equation. The calculators below are to be used when Scr is in µmol/L.

IDMS-Traceable MDRD Study Equation1

NOTE: This equation should be used only with those creatinine methods that have been recalibrated to be traceable to IDMS. For more information about recalibration, visit NKDEP's Laboratory Professionals section.

GFR (mL/min/1.73 m2) = 175 x (Scr/88.4)-1.154 x (Age)-0.203 x (0.742 if female) x (1.212 if African American) (SI units)

The equation does not require weight because the results are reported normalized to 1.73 m2 body surface area, which is an accepted average adult surface area.

Plasma creatinine (µmol/L)
Age*
African American Yes No
Gender Male Female

GFR value: mL/min/1.73 m2**
*This equation should only be used for patients 18 and older.

**The NKDEP presently recommends reporting estimated GFR values greater than or equal to 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 simply as "≥60 mL/min/1.73 m2", not an exact number.
