Research Activities

SEER currently supports research activities in a variety of areas:

  • Rapid Response Surveillance Studies
This is a program of special studies which address topical issues in cancer prevention and control. New and emerging issues related to cancer prevention and control can be investigated using this mechanism that allows studies to move from the initial concept through completion in a relatively short interval.
  • Residual Tissue Repository Program
This program was initiated to preserve pathology specimens associated with cancer cases in SEER registries that would otherwise be discarded, and to use these specimens to test hypotheses relevant to the population-based sample.
  • SEER-Medicare Linked Database - The SEER-Medicare data reflect the linkage of two large population-based sources of data that provide detailed information about elderly persons with cancer, which can be used for an array of epidemiological and health services research.
  • Historical Landmark Studies
Since its inception, SEER has made many scientific contributions to epidemiologic research through a number of landmark studies in surveillance, epidemiology, and end results.
