Jun Shen, Ph.D.
Jen Shen Photo   Dr. Shen is chief of the Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Core Facility Mood & Anxiety Disorders Program of the Intramural Research Program, National Institute of Mental Health, National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He also directs the Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Core Facility. He attended college at Nankai University and graduate school at Nankai University and University of Wisconsin at Madison. He did postdoctoral research in molecular biochemistry and biophysics at Yale University School of Medicine. He joined NIMH in 2002. His previous work involved in vivo magnetic resonance spectroscopy technology and applications with a focus on measuring glutamate and GABA. Prior to joining NIMH, he received a NARSAD Young Investigator Award.
Research Interests
Dr. Shen’s research at the NIMH focuses on non-invasive in vivo magnetic resonance spectroscopy and imaging technology development and applications. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) allows detection of concentration of many chemicals (e.g., glutamate and GABA) in vivo, which may be used as important disease markers. Using carbon-13 MRS, certain metabolic fluxes can also be measured. The recent discovery of carbon-13 magnetization transfer effect by Dr. Shen and colleagues has extended the scope of carbon-13 MRS to include measurement of fluxes catalyzed by specific enzymes in vivo. Dr. Shen’s group is interested in applying advanced proton and heteronuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging techniques to studying chemical pools, fluxes and enzyme reactions in normal brain function and in neuropsychiatric disorders.
