Ellen Leibenluft, M.D.
Ellen Leibenluft Photo   Dr. Leibenluft received her B.A. from Yale University and her M.D. from Stanford University. After completing residency training at Georgetown University Hospital, she served on the faculty there as director of the psychiatric inpatient unit and day hospital. She came to the NIMH in 1989, and since that time has been conducting research on bipolar disorder. In addition to that work, Dr. Leibenluft has written and spoken widely on gender differences in the prevalence and symptomatology of mood disorders. Her awards include the Distinguished Psychiatrist Award of the American Psychiatric Association and a Visiting Professorship at the Department of Psychiatry, Cornell University School of Medicine.
Research Interests
Dr. Leibenluft is Chief of the Section on Bipolar Spectrum Disorders in the Emotion and Development Branch, Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program, National Institute of Mental Health. Her main area of research interest is bipolar disorder in children and adolescents, with a particular emphasis on differences between children and adults in the presentation of the illness; neural mechanisms underlying the symptoms of the illness; and the development of new treatment strategies for early-onset bipolar disorder. She has also studied rapid cycling bipolar disorder (a severe form of the illness) in adults and the role of the sleep-wake cycle in bipolar disorder.
