General Waste Management Procedures

Office Waste
  • Reduce, reuse, and recycle white office paper and other material where possible
  • For larger items, label as "TRASH," inform Housekeeping for collection
Glass/Plastic Labware
  • Place uncontaminated or decontaminated Labware in the Disposable Labware & Broken Glass container
  • Glassware/Labware that cannot readily be decontaminated must be disposed of as MPW
Liquid Culture Media
  • Before disposal, cell culture media must be decontaminated (see MPW page for instructions) either by steam autoclave or adding disinfectant directly to vessel or treating pooled spent media
  • Decontaminated media may be discarded into a sink drain
  • Dispose of empty, decontaminated cell culture vessels in the Disposable Labware & Broken Glass container
Solid Media
  • Autoclave (see MPW Section), then dispose of the bag and solid media: in Building 10, into a Disposable Labware & Broken Glass container; in all other buildings, into a general waste container
Animal Bedding
  • Contaminated bedding must be disposed of as MPW
  • Fill polyethylene bag (NSN-81 05-01-044-5727) only 3/4 full or up to 40 pounds
  • To close bag, twist top and seal securely with either plastic bag closure tie or filament tape
