Clinical/Scientific Training and Special Programs
There are a variety of training programs at NIH that provide experience and support to scientists who are in the beginning stages of their professional research or clinical careers. Usually, these positions do not count against the FTE ceiling and the trainees are not considered "employees" of the NIH. The NIH Office of Education provides detailed information regarding training opportunities and may be contacted for additional information.
Guest Researchers
In addition to the training programs coordinated by the NIH Office of Education, NIH also allows, on occasion, outside scientists, engineers, and students to engage in scientific studies and investigations using NIH facilities under the Guest Researcher Program. Under the Guest Researcher program, individuals further their own research by using equipment and resources that are otherwise unavailable to them. Guest Researchers provide no direct services to NIH and are not compensated by NIH.
Volunteers
Volunteers, called "Special Volunteers" at NIH, are individuals who provide research services, direct patient care, clerical support, technical assistance, or any other necessary services for NIH. They are not compensated by NIH. Under the Special Volunteer Program volunteer services may be accepted from any appropriate source, including individuals who donate their services as members of volunteer or charitable organizations, on their own time, as part of a fellowship paid by a stipend from an outside organization, or from Federal employees who volunteer outside of their normal work hours.
