Dr. Laurie Gutmann earned a B.A. in biology at Oberlin College in 1981.  She received her M.D. in 1986 from West Virginia University School of Medicine (WVU).  Her neurology residency training and neuromuscular disease fellowship were completed at the University of Virginia in 1990 and 1991 respectively.  After 2 ½ years in private practice in Erie, Pennsylvania, she returned to an academic neurology position at WVU School of Medicine as Assistant Professor, rising to the rank of full Professor.   She is board certified in Neurology and has her subspecialty boards in clinical neurophysiology.  She has specialized in her practice in neuromuscular diseases and clinical neurophysiology, serving as medical director of the EMG laboratory and codirector of the Muscular Dystrophy Association clinic since 1994.  She established an ALS multidisciplinary clinic at WVU in 2004.  She is currently a WVU Professor of Neurology and Exercise Physiology and Neurology Residency Program Director.  In addition, she has initiated or been involved in multiple clinical trials for ALS, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, and myotonic dystrophy.  She continues to serve on multiple national committees for neurological associations and is a senior examiner for the neurology board examinations. She has been working part-time with the Clinical Trials Group at NINDS since May, 2005.
