NIH Purchase Card Training (NBS)

DescriptionThis 2-day classroom course is mandatory for anyone who will apply to become an NIH Purchase Cardholder and/or NIH Purchase Card Approving Official (CAO). The course provides an introduction to purchasing using the NIH Purchase Card and an overview of the NIH Business System (NBS) for logging purchases and reconciliation. Each student will receive a training guide that includes NIH purchase card policies and NBS purchase card procedures.
Key Topics At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Understand the uses and limitations of the NIH Purchase Card
- Perform the roles and responsibilities of a Cardholder and/or CAO
- Identify the key areas in which Cardholders and CAOs are involved in the purchase card process
- Follow procedures for purchases below $3,000
- Follow procedures for purchases above $3,000
- Document purchases specific to HHS and NIH requirements
- Use the NBS to log purchases
- Use the NBS to reconcile bank transactions
Audience- Prospective Cardholders (required)
- Prospective CAOs (required)
- Existing Cardholders and CAOs (optional)
- IC Purchase Card Coordinators (optional)
Special Note:
This class is mandatory for all prospective Purchase Cardholders and CAO's and is NOT an NBS-only class for those current Cardholders and CAO's who desire additional practice with the NBS.
For NBS access as a P-Card User or P-Card Approver, course participants must meet all training requirements as defined by OLAO/PCP, including this course. For information on training requirements, please send an email to creditcard@od.nih.gov.

- This course does not include training on the invoice payment process.
- Completion of this course does not provide access to MarkView.
