The Effect of Propranolol on Drug-Related Memories

What is the purpose of the research study?
To see if the blood pressure medication propranolol (pronounced
pro-PRAN-uh-lol) has any effect on the emotions associated with
drug-related memories.

Who can participate in the study?
This study is accepting men and women who:

  • Are 18 to 55 years of age
  • Currently use cocaine
  • Are enrolled in methadone maintenance

What will participants be asked to do?
The study consists of 14 visits over 7 weeks. One visit will involve
a 2-night stay in an inpatient unit.

Participants will:

  • Give urine and breath samples
  • Complete questionnaires
  • Be asked to take a capsule that will contain propranolol or a placebo (a pill with no drug) on one visit
  • Listen to tapes and view related objects

Where is the study taking place?
The NIDA Intramural Research Program is located on the Johns Hopkins Bayview campus in East Baltimore.

Will there be any cost to participate?
There is no cost for participation.

Will I receive payment of some kind?
All study participants will be compensated for their time and travel.
