Fran Thompson
Frances (Fran) E. Thompson, PhD, is an Epidemiologist who came to the National Cancer Institute in 1991.
Previously, she was a research investigator at Cornell University examining dietary
patterns, and she worked with the NY State Nutrition Surveillance Program monitoring soup
kitchens and food pantries. Prior to that she was a research investigator at the
University of Michigan, examining the reproducibility of past diet reports, on an
NCI-funded grant.
Dr. Thompson received her PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Michigan in 1984,
her MPH in Public Health Nutrition and Health Planning from the University of Michigan in
1979, and her BS in Community Nutrition and Community Development from Penn State in 1973.
Her research has focused on developing and evaluating dietary assessment tools for
population studies, and modifying instruments for Hispanic and Asian populations. Her
research has been published in public health and nutrition journals. In addition, she has
co-written a resource manual and a book chapter on dietary assessment methodology.
