Communications

Materials developed for the public require government review and clearance to ensure that science and policy are conveyed to the proposed audience. The type of material and level of review needed determines how quickly clearances occur; some can take up to 5 months.

DCP's Communications Manager in the Office of the Director works with NCI's Office of Communications and Education (OCE). OCE's centralized services, resources, and information help communicate NCI programs, messages, events, and publications to the media, health professionals, and the public. Media relations specialists can help develop fact sheets; monitor stories in the news; and provide media training, among other services.

The DCP Communications Manager should be consulted about public materials and the types of clearances needed. Materials normally requiring division-only review include: scientific manuscripts, editorials, reviews, book chapters, posters, abstracts, formal speeches, and oral presentations.

Review by NCI, NIH and DHHS is usually required for: certain NCI web products, brochures, pamphlets, exhibits, books, monographs, printed public service announcements, TV and radio spots, educational CDs or videotapes costing over $5,000, large reports with public interest, and materials for the mass media.

Peer review only is typically required for: letters to study participants, patient recruitment materials, committee reports or monographs, recruitment materials for fellowships, newsletters, items to be reprinted that contain NCI logos, onetime project or meeting logos, including workshop materials, and videotapes produced by others with the NCI logo.
