Using Health Claims Data for Cancer Surveillance

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) are seeking investigator-initiated grant applications for research involving the use of health care claims data for surveillance. Cancer surveillance may include assessing patterns of care, quality and outcomes of care, and health disparities. Research projects may focus on treatment and outcomes at the patient level or address influences from the broader health care system level. This research can also include analyses of how health claims data can be used for cancer surveillance.

This grant covers priority areas for both NCI and AHRQ. In the report entitled, "The Nation's Investment in Cancer Research," NCI addresses its priorities, including improving the quality of cancer care and reducing cancer-related health disparities. AHRQ supports general health services and outcomes and effectiveness research for a wide range of clinical conditions, including cancer.

Increasingly, there is interest in collecting and analyzing valid, accurate, and reliable secondary data to assess screening, treatment, and outcomes for specific diseases.

This initiative will utilize the NIH investigator-initiated research project grant (R01) and the exploratory/developmental grant (R21) award mechanisms. The total project period for an application being submitted must not exceed five years (R01) or two years (R21).
