    Functional Area: Management Analysis

    Throughout the NIH, Management Analysts fill a unique role by performing a variety of key administrative functions for their respective Institutes/Centers (ICs). They often serve as integral players on an IC's management team by working closely with the Executive Officer and senior leadership to develop administrative policies and procedures. They have the opportunity to oversee workforce planning, provide advice on management issues, and conduct studies/analyses to enhance efficiency and productivity.

    A day in the life of a Management Analyst is never dull or predictable. A Management Analyst must be a "generalist" of sorts; the job requires knowledge of a variety of topics. Functional areas that typically fall within the purview of a Management Analyst include delegations of authority, records management, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), Privacy Act, and project clearance (OMB clearance of information collections).

    The Management Analyst works on management issues such as quality of work/life (telework, alternative work schedules), competitive sourcing (A-76), ethics, internal controls, organizational changes, and performance management.

    A Management Analyst works with upper management on awards, change management, such as benchmarking and reengineering, and some HR liaison functions. Some Management Analysts have discovered that possessing such a diverse background and a broad knowledge base has been advantageous to their career development, often resulting in future leadership positions within NIH, such as Senior Administrative Officers, Deputy Executive Officers, or Executive Officers.

    The NIH community has a Management Analyst Working Group (MAWG) that meets on a monthly basis to discuss timely administrative related issues and management "hot topics."
