How Genes Affect the Brain

What is the purpose of the research study?
To compare genetics with brain structure, function, and behavior.

Who can participate in the study?
This study is accepting men and women who are 18 to 50 years of age and use one or more of the following:

  • Cigarettes
  • Cocaine
  • Marijuana
  • Alcohol
  • Other drugs

Healthy volunteers who do not smoke or use drugs are also needed for this study.

What will participants be asked to do?
The study takes about 9 hours and can be broken up into 1, 2, or 3 study visits.

Participants will:

  • Receive a physical exam
  • Provide blood and urine samples
  • Complete questionnaires
  • Receive an MRI brain scan

Where is the study taking place?
The NIDA Intramural Research Program is located on the Johns Hopkins Bayview campus in East Baltimore.

How much does it cost?
There is no cost for participation.

Will I receive payment of some kind?
All study participants will be compensated for their time and travel.
