Annotated R01 Research Plan and Summary Statement

Note: We expect that in 2009, application data will be old enough that investigators would be willing to have their applications appear online. At that point we'll post a new sample application. For more on application, see NIAID's Grant Application portal.

Introduction

We are truly indebted to Dr. Mark Smeltzer for permitting us to use his outstanding basic science application, which he wrote as a new investigator, to help the next generation of investigators write their applications.

Though his research plan was originally written in 1998, we've updated the application to reflect the latest application sections and requirements. We expect to post a sample electronic application once investigators feel that data are old enough to share.

All our yellow annotations reflect the opinion of NIAID staff scientists and should be taken as advice only. Differing opinions may exist, including those of NIH peer reviewers.

Please note that the application is copyrighted. It may be used for nonprofit educational purposes provided the document remains unchanged and both Dr. Smeltzer and NIAID are credited.
