What is the purpose of the research study?
To learn more about the effects of smoking a cigarette on brain activity and to compare these effects in smokers with non-smokers.

Who can participate in the study?
This study is accepting men who:

• Are 21 to 40 years of age
• Smoke cigarettes or don’t smoke cigarettes
• Are in generally good health

What will participants be asked to do?
The study consists of four 1-day study visits and two overnight study visits.
Participants will:

• Complete questionnaires and computer-based thinking tasks
• Provide urine and blood samples
• Have an MRI brain scan
• Have two head x-rays, if necessary
• Have two PET (positron emission tomography) scans
• Be injected with a radioactive medication during the PET scans

Where is the study taking place?
The NIDA Intramural Research Program is located on the Johns
Hopkins Bayview campus in East Baltimore. The overnight study
visits and PET scans will take place on the Johns Hopkins Hospital
campus in Baltimore City.

How much does it cost?
There is no cost for participation.

Will I receive payment of some kind?
All study participants will be compensated for their time and travel.
