Who is the audience for the Research Funding Web site?

Research Funding is for NIAID's extramural grantees, contractors, applicants, offerors, and Institute staff. Key parts of the site form portals targeted to different audiences, award stages, and science areas:

Stages

Audiences

Science Areas

This design puts content in context, for example, the application portal walks you through the application process, linking to other pages for more detailed information. The R01 portal is different: it links directly to resources R01 investigators need.

In addition to the portals, we have SOP, question and answer, and Find It lists, which are integrated into the portal approach. You can access these portals from the Research Funding front page or the main Grants portals or page.

Other sections are NIAID Funding News, Budget and Funding, and Opportunities and Announcements.

The right-hand column houses direct links to our most popular pages as well as Glossary links related to the page.

If I need help from NIAID, where can I find contact information?

You can learn how to get help from NIAID staff on Contact Staff for Help in the NIH Grant Cycle: Application to Renewal. Also see the Finding Help questions and answers.

How do I get the latest news from NIAID?

Sign up for Email Alerts to receive emails for NIAID Funding News, new initiatives, concepts, policy notices, and more. To register, go to the iconNIAID Funding News and Email Alerts Subscription Center.

Do you have old issues of the NIAID Funding News newsletter?

Yes. Go to NIAID Funding News for back issues of the newsletter. Be aware that information may have changed after publication.

Where do I find help writing a grant application?

Go to the NIH Grant Cycle: Application to Renewal, and see our Annotated R01 Research Plan and Summary Statement and other resources on the All About Grants site.

Where did the information and advice in the NIH Grant Cycle come from?

We wrote the NIH Grant Cycle: Application to Renewal based on input from senior-level scientists in the Institute who are former NIH grantees. Read more in Introducing the NIH Grant Cycle.

Is there a list of all topics covered in the NIH Grant Cycle or advice only?

Yes. Go to Table of Contents or Advice Index, listed in How to Use the NIH Grant Cycle.

Where can I find the most recent updates and policy changes on the site?

We publish this information in several places:

Where do you post detailed information on policy and process?

Our SOPs give you the most detailed information on policy and process.

Why should I use the NIH Funding Opportunities Relevant to NIAID?

NIH Funding Opportunities Relevant to NIAID houses Institute opportunities and provides or links to the most helpful information for applicants:

Click the column headers to sort the list, or search titles using Control F. If you need a full text search, use the Guide site.

Where do I find information on NIAID's payline?

Go to Budget and Funding. Each fiscal year, we publish paylines as soon as we have that information usually starting in December or January. The R01 payline stays in effect until the end of the fiscal year; others may change.

Learn what to expect at Paylines and Budget Page Changes Throughout the Year. For more information on paylines, see Paylines Are a Conservative Funding Cut Point.

How does NIAID plan for scientific initiatives?

The process starts with the development of concepts, the early planning stages for initiatives: program announcements, requests for applications, or request for proposals. Read more in Planning Research Opportunities. See our Opportunities and Announcements portal for a list.

If I have a question about a topic, where should I begin to look for information?

Our Questions and Answers pages cover many topics. Answers provide links to more in-depth information on the Research Funding site.

If you cannot find an answer to any question, email deaweb@niaid.nih.gov, and we'll do our best to answer it.

What is Find It! A-Z?

Our Find It! A-Z is an alphabetical list of the SOPs, tools, and forms on the Research Funding Web site, as well as other NIAID, NIH, and outside links we thought researchers would find useful.

In addition, Find It! includes SOPs, tools, and links for NIAID extramural staff. Intranet links that work for NIAID staff only are marked by a lock icon (Lock icon: This link will not work for public visitors.).

Where can I find definitions for NIH terminology?

Our NIAID Glossary of Funding and Policy Terms and Acronyms defines terms and acronyms and includes links to relevant documents both on our Web site and outside sites, including official policy and laws. For acronyms for NIAID programs, go to Profile and Fact Book.

How do I find information on special policy areas, such as human subjects or biodefense?

Go to Grants and Contracts for links to portal pages for biodefense, research animals, recombinant DNA, and other special research areas.

I want to prepare for electronic application. Where do I find help?

Go to the following resources:

For more information, see NIAID's Grant Application portal and visit NIH's Electronic Submission site.

Do you have samples of successful grant applications?

Yes. We have an Annotated R01 Research Plan and Summary Statement and a small business application. Both are annotated to highlight the features that make them outstanding.

How do I learn what is needed to apply for a certain grant type, e.g., conference grants?

See our Grants portals and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) which describe steps for applicants, grantees, and staff.

Why do some standard operating procedures say 'This SOP has internal roles only'?

Some SOPs describe processes that require actions only from NIAID staff, not from researchers. We post these pages on the Research Funding Web site so that the extramural community can see how NIAID manages the funding of grant and contract awards.

Why can't I open links in SOPs that are marked with a lock icon?

These pages are for NIAID staff only. No one outside NIAID can view these pages.

Where do I find information on human subjects research policies?

Go to Human Subjects, Clinical Research.

Where is help for training and career awards?

The Training and Career Awards home page lists resources and helpful links for fellowships, training grants, career development awards, and supplements.
