  • To align the proper incentives so as to attract and recruit the caliber of individuals we seek, NIDDK has developed a generous total compensation package of salary and benefits. Many benefits are standard as part of the federal employment system (e.g., vacation, sick leave, health insurance, life insurance, retirement) and will not be discussed further. Please see the following site for specific information: http://www.opm.gov/insure/index.asp .

    Salary Structure

The following Pay-Scale Guidelines (Title 42 Model) are in place for the Period May 1, 2005 through April 30, 2006:

    Post-Graduate Year Starting Salary
    4 $54,815
    5 $60,103
    6 $67,111
    7 $73,088
    8 $78,072
    9 $79,403
    10 $80,730

    Loan Repayment Program

Senior Clinical Research Fellows will be hired under the position title of Clinical Fellow. As such, they will be federal employees and, therefore, eligible to apply for Education Loan Deferment and Loan Repayment. Subject to approval by the Scientific Director of NIDDK and review by the Central Intramural Loan Repayment Program Committee, Fellows can have loans repaid in the amount of a maximum of $35K each year for three years.

    K22 Career Transition Award

Senior Clinical Research Fellows will also be strongly considered and actively encouraged to apply for the NIDDK Career Transition Award (K22). In brief, this five-year award consists of two phases: (1) three years of research within the intramural program at NIH and (2) two years of extramural funding at an outside university, medical school, hospital, or research institute. It is anticipated that applicants to the Senior Clinical Research Fellowships Program would be highly competitive for such awards, especially in the light of efforts to train and provide “bridge funding” support for early career physician-scientists as they move to their first faculty positions. The ability to carry ~$200K in salary and research support to one’s new institution should make these awardees particularly attractive to Departmental Chairpersons and Deans.
