Positions
in Geographic Information Systems and Spatial Statistics
Salary: Commensurate with Experience
Location: Rockville, MD, near Washington DC
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) has openings for two positions within
the Surveillance Research Program (SRP), of the Division of Cancer Control
and Population Sciences (DCCPS). This is located within the National
Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
Through the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program,
SRP directs the collection and analysis of cancer data in order to answer
key questions about cancer incidence, mortality, and cancer-related health
status in diverse regions and populations in the United States. SRP has
an active program of research in the areas of Geographic Information
Systems (GIS), the statistical analysis of spatial and temporal patterns
of cancer, and spatial data visualization (http://gis.cancer.gov/).
Geographer: The Cancer Surveillance Geographer will
provide expertise in geography, GIS, and spatial analysis, to:
- Consult with SEER registries on geocoding methods and accuracy
to ensure high-quality geographic reference information for cancer
cases.
- Maintain and extend existing methods and research
new methods to scan cancer surveillance data for unusual geographic
patterns. Evaluate,
recommend, and direct the development of GIS-related tools and extensions
for the analysis of cancer data.
- Provide expertise to facilitate
linkage of diverse area-based information related to possible cancer
risk factors and general health behavior such as data on socioeconomic
status, environmental exposures, transportation networks, and access
to care. Develop spatial data sets relevant
to cancer etiology and cancer prevention and control. Assist
in the development of a GIS “enterprise system,” which
will be a common repository for commonly used georeferenced data.
- Enhance
the web-based dissemination of geographic data on cancer rates and
related health behaviors.
- Help guide the GIS Special Interest
Group (GISSIG), which meets regularly to exchange information, hold
workshops and seminars useful for all staff involved in the study of
the geography of health with participation from the entire NIH community.
Requirements: Masters or Ph.D. in geography or related field and at
least 5 years experience in geographic-related research, including
(but not limited to) geographic information systems (GIS), disease
mapping, spatial analysis, and geocoding. Experience with ArcGIS,
spatial analysis software, and cancer registry data is highly desired.
Spatial Statistician: The mid- to senior-level Spatial Statistician
will lead SRP staff involved in geographically-related areas of statistical
research and applications, to:
- Identify areas where improved statistical methods are needed to conduct
studies of the spatial and spatio-temporal patterns of cancer-related
outcomes.
- Evaluate and recommend appropriate tools for others who wish to conduct
such studies.
- Extend existing statistical methods to allow a scientifically rigorous
analysis of geographic data.
Requirements: Ph.D. in biostatistics or related field and at least
7 years experience in spatial statistical methods applications and
research, with emphasis on model-based methods. Experience in
one or more of the following areas is also desirable: disease rate
mapping, geovisualization, geographic information systems and cancer
registry data analysis.
Opportunities exist for collaboration and leadership in the areas of
geographically-related analysis throughout the NCI, with other NIH Institutes,
other federal agencies, and the extramural research community. Candidates
must demonstrate a strong record of analytical and methodological research
and scientific collaboration. Located in Rockville, MD, near Washington,
DC. Excellent benefits. U.S. citizenship or permanent residency
is required for federal positions. DHHS and NIH are equal opportunity
employers.
A letter summarizing experience and interests, and a
complete CV including names of three references should be sent, preferably
by electronic mail to:
