Transfer Large Files

How do I transfer large files?

There are several ways you can transfer a large file or files:

1.  Send the file or files attached to an email. You can send files up to 100MB in size using your NIH email, however there is a good chance that your recipient will not be able to receive such a large file. If you are sending multiple large files or you are concerned about the ability of your recipient to receive large files you can use a compression tool such as WinZip to compress the files into a "zipped" attachment. Call the NIH Help Desk if you need assistance with this activity - 301-496-HELP (4357).

2.  Send the recipient an email with a "link" (or URL) embedded in the message.  The link must point the recipient to a file storage location, which is accessible to them, that contains your file.  They will then download the file from that storage location - usually by just clicking on the link. This is a method commonly used if the recipient’s email storage limits are a concern or when sending to large numbers of people.  Call the NIH Help Desk at 301-496-HELP (4357) or contact your IC's local "IT Pro" if you need assistance with this activity.

3.  You can use a secure file transfer service. NIH is evaluating a service that integrates with email, partially automates large file transfer for files up to 2GB in size, and ensures that the file is transferred securely.  You can register for this at https://securefiletransfer.nih.gov. Instructions are given after registration.
