Getting Started with Wireless for Guests at NIH

NIH Wireless Guest Service provides patients and visitors to the NIH campus temporary access to the Internet and NIH public resources.

Creating a Guest Wireless Account (Guest SSID and Wireless WEP key configuration information)

A Guest user will need the following in order to connect to the network:

  1. A wireless device with a 802.11g or older 802.11b compliant wireless card or built-in antennae. The operating system running on the device must include a Web browser. Note: 802.11a cards are not compatible with NIH Wireless service.
  2. The Guest SSID and Wireless WEP key configuration information. To obtain this, go to Creating a Guest Wireless Account. Guests can obtain this information from the same individual who provides your username and password. This will be needed for proper configuration of the wireless client.
  3. Access to an area that is covered by NIH Wireless Guest Service. Most, but not all, NIH Wireless coverage areas allow guests to connect. For example, ORS conference rooms and dining areas allow guest access, whereas some security-restricted lab areas do not. Ask your NIH technical support contact to confirm guest access in the area in which you plan to use wireless service.
  4. A Guest user account and password. To obtain a username and password, a guest should contact their sponsoring Institute or Center's technical staff. Each IC has designated individuals who are authorized to create a guest account. If unsure, a guest can contact the NIH Help Desk for guidance.

Once a wireless device is properly configured to access the NIH Wireless network, a guest is ready to authenticate. The guest user must open a Web browser and attempt to access any Web resource (e.g. www.nih.gov). At that time, a login page will appear. A user should enter the temporary username and password provided to them. Once the account information is verified, access to the Internet will be granted.

An authenticated guest has access to any resources available through the Internet, including public NIH Web pages.
