Getting Started with Wireless for Staff at NIH

Follow these steps to connect to NIHnet via wireless.

  1. Equipment: get a wireless client card that is compatible with the 802.11g or older 802.11b standard.
    Contact the NIH Help Desk or your IC Technical LAN Coordinator for advice on selecting a wireless card. CIT recommends the Cisco Aironet wireless client card. CIT also provides wireless client profiles for Avaya, Enterasys, and Apple wireless client cards.
  2. Obtain SSID and WEP key.
    Contact your IC Technical LAN Coordinator or the NIH Help Desk to obtain the SSID and WEP key.
  3. Download client software.
    1. If you have a Cisco, Avaya, or Enterasys wireless client card, log on to CIT’s iSDP Web site for wireless to download client drivers, software utilities and procedures for installation and configuration.
    2. If your client card is from another vendor,download the appropriate software from the vendor’s Web site.
  4. Install wireless client software and configure wireless client profile.
    1. Follow the procedures that you downloaded from the iSDP (step 3 above).
    2. If you need assistance, contact the NIH Help Desk.
  5. Download and install VPN software.
    1. Log on to CIT’s iSDP Web site for VPN to download the VPN client software.
      (Note: If your laptop is running Macintosh OS 8 or 9, you can purchase the wireless VPN client software from Netlock. MovianVPN for Palm or Windows CE is available from Certicom.)
    2. Follow the instructions at CIT’s Remote Access Web site to install the VPN client software. Note: You do not need a VPN account to use the NIH wireless network VPN.
    3. Contact the NIH Help Desk for assistance if needed.
  6. Log on to NIHnet using VPN.
    1. Power up your laptop and wait for about two minutes for initialization to be completed.
    2. Connect via wireless VPN using your NIH domain username and password.
    3. Log on to Windows with your NIH domain username and password.

Windows loads and you are connected to NIHnet via VPN.
