Instant Messaging

Internal Instant Messaging

CIT offers two internal IM services, Office Communications Service (OCS) and Jabber XCP. Both services provide a desktop tool to communicate internally using chat and group chat, and both have a Web version that allows customers to chat through their Web browsers. Please note that Jabber XCP is in “pilot” status.

OCS has versions for Windows and Macintosh that integrate with SharePoint and Outlook and allow users to see the availability (with options to set levels of privacy) of other staff members. OCS allows users to collaboratively engage in conferencing with chat, video, and audio capabilities.

Jabber is an “open-source” product that is compatible with many Unix- and Linux-based instant messaging programs, as well as Windows, and Macintosh customers can use it together with iChat. Through the use of an IM “gateway,” communications, availability, and presence information can be shared between these two services.

For more information or to download installation files, please see OCS and Jabber.

External Instant Messaging

CIT provides a security gateway, with antivirus protection, for users of a number of instant messaging (IM) services, such as MSN, AOL, Yahoo!, and Google Talk. For detailed support information, see External Instant Messaging.

Register Your IM Screen Name(s)

NIH policy requires that if you are using one of the supported IM services you must register your screen name(s) to your NIH Domain Account.
