Cancer Information Service (CIS)

Description:

The Cancer Information Service (CIS) provides information about cancer to patients and their families, physicians and other health professionals, and the public. The CIS's three-pronged approach utilizes information specialists that answer question about cancer by telephone, TTY, instant messaging and email; a partnership program that reaches those who may have limited access to health information; and a research program that helps advance health communication practices.

The CIS Research Program is a collaborative research venture in which investigators partner with the CIS to plan, implement, and disseminate the findings from applied research studies that further the field of health communication, discover and test effective communication approaches to educating the public about cancer, and contribute to the nation's cancer control efforts.

Between 1999 and 2005, the CIS participated in more than 50 cancer communication research studies that focused on the following broad areas:

• Cancer information and messages tailored to specific audiences;
• Clinical trials education;
• Risk counseling; and
• Treatment decision-making
