What does NIAID support for minority students and investigators and others with special needs?

See Research Supplements (PCTAS, Diversity, Reentry). Also, for students, we support Individual Predoctoral Fellowships (F31) to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research.

Must fellows and trainees pay back the first 12 months of NRSA support?

Predoctoral fellows and trainees do not incur a payback obligation. Postdoctoral fellows and trainees incur a payback obligation for the first 12 months of NRSA support, which may be paid back with an additional 12 months of NRSA post-doctoral support. See Fellowships (F).

Are there citizenship or residency requirements for any of these awards?

Yes. Except for the K99 mechanism, you must be a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or have permanent residency status (an Alien Registration Receipt Card, Form I-551) at time of award or appointment. People on temporary or student visas are not eligible.

Is a trainee a grantee?

No. Training grants are awarded to eligible institutions that pay stipends and benefits to candidates selected for pre- and postdoctoral research training by the training grant program director and a selection committee.
