Shui-Yu Lu, Ph.D.
Shui-Yu Lu Photo   Dr. Shui-Yu Lu is a Staff Scientist within the PET Radiopharmaceutical Sciences Section (Chief, Dr. Victor Pike), Molecular Imaging Branch, NIMH, NIH. He graduated from the Department of Chemistry, Nanjing University, China with BSc in organic chemistry and obtained PhD in synthetic polymer chemistry at the University of Manchester, England. He carried out postdoctoral research at the Department of Chemistry, University of Edinburgh, Scotland and was a Research Fellow at the Department of Chemistry, University of Surrey, England until May 2002.
Research Interests:
Dr. Lu's research at the NIMH is centered on the development of novel, rapid and safe PET radiolabeling methodologies through the application of new reagents and new technology. The research addresses the demand for radiotracer and radioligand production for brain PET imaging in terms of the availability of the 18F and 11C labelled compounds, their specific radioactivity, radiochemical purity, and radiochemical yield. For example the combined microwave technology (rapid chemical reaction) and polymer-supported reagents (easy separation) are used to synthesize the 5-HT1A receptor ligand, WAY 100635, and structurally similar compounds. He is also pursuing the application of microreactor technology, which offers fundamental and practical advantages such as controllability, high selectivity and high atom efficiency for chemical processing, to the synthesis PET radiopharmaceuticals.

Specifically, current research projects include: (1) Microwave-enhanced solid phase synthesis of amides; (2) Microwave-enhanced rapid fluoridation procedure using nucleophilic release mechanism from polymer-supported sulfonates [in collaboration with scientists from Florida Atlantic University]; (3) Development of microreactor for PET synthesis [in collaboration with scientists from Hull University, UK]; (4) Reactivity and mechanism of fluoroethyl tosylate as a [18F]fluoridation reagent towards amines, acids and phenols; (5) Direct fluorine-halogen exchange on a-haloalkyl aryl ethers [in collaboration with scientists from Karolinska Institute, Sweden].
