Day 1Carry One Day Parking Permit Included in your hiring packet
You must carry this parking pass on your first day if arriving by car.
Orientation – Some form of orientation is appropriate for ALL new staff, the process varies by appointment
Government Employees (FTEs) Orientation with OHR: scheduled for every first day of a new pay period (every other Monday); the default location is Bldg. 31/Rm. 6C06, but it may vary due to availability. Check your packet for definitive directions.

2) followed by Division of International Services Check-In. These steps can be completed prior to or the day after the OHR Orientation.

This packet will be shipped to you via FedEx prior to your first day. Be sure to contact the Administrative Services Branch at 301-496-4271 if you have not received it.

Independent Contractors/Consultants Report to assigned Lab/Branch or administrative office and refer to the area’s administrative support staff.
Obtaining an NIH ID, a Parking Permit or enrolling in Transhare, and finger printing requires a visit to the same office and can (and should) be done at the same time.

To obtain an NIH ID card, you must submit to finger printing and security check.
ID Card NIH Police Support Services Branch
You must fill out an NIH Employee Database (NED) request during your administrative orientation. You can obtain your NIH ID card once your information has been entered; at the ID station, you must show a valid picture ID (e.g., driver’s license or passport).
Parking Permit or Transhare NIH Parking Office
To obtain an NIH Parking Permit, you must show a valid driver’s license and vehicle registration.
Bank Account/ACH Direct Deposit Slip Direct Deposit Enrollment Form
The Federal Government disburses employee pay/fellow stipends through direct deposit only. Be sure that you are able to provide account information from a bank that accepts ACH payments.

DefinitionsFTEs (Full-Time Equivalency) are hired through a variety of mechanisms, including but not limited to: GS, Title-42 (AD), and the Commissioned Corps. A few job titles that are FTEs include Tenured Investigator, Tenure-Track Investigator, Staff Scientist, Staff Clinician, Biologist, Psychologist, Social Worker, Statistician, Biological Lab Technician, Program Assistant, Secretary, Purchasing Agent, Administrative Technician, Administrative Officer, Budget Analyst, Clinical Fellow and Research Fellow. This is not a complete list of all FTE job titles.
Non-FTEs are those who are not hired through a Full-Time Equivalency mechanism. Common job titles of non-FTEs include Post-bac IRTA, Technical IRTA, Pre-doc IRTA, Post-doc IRTA, and Visiting Fellow. Special Volunteers and Guest Researchers are sometimes included in this category, but they do not receive remuneration from the NIMH.
Contractors are those who are hired by an outside organization, who perform work for the NIMH.
