SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth (SEARCH)
Who can participate?
Children and youth who are under age 20 when they were diagnosed with diabetes may be eligible to join. Eligibility may depend on the place the child or young adult resides or the place where health care is received.
What is this study?
The study focuses on children and youth in the U.S. who have diabetes. Data from these children and youth will provide more information and help us better understand diabetes. It is expected that the six clinical centers located in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Ohio, South Carolina, and Washington will invite approximately 9,000 children and youth who have been diagnosed with diabetes to participate in this study. SEARCH is in its second 5-year phase and is funded by the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) and NIDDK (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases). Additional information on SEARCH is found at: http://www.searchfordiabetes.org
Why is it being done?
The study goals are to (1) identify the number of children and youth under age 20 who have diabetes, (2) study how type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes differ, including how they differ by age and race/ethnicity, (3) learn more about the complications of diabetes in children and youth, (4) investigate the different types of care and medical treatment that these children and youth receive, and (5) learn more about how diabetes affects the everyday lives of children and youth who have diabetes. The SEARCH study will provide valuable information to researchers and health care providers in an attempt to find ways to treat and increase knowledge about diabetes in children and youth.
If I enroll in this study, what do I have to do?
If selected as a possible SEARCH participant, we will contact you or your child to find out if he or she is actually eligible for the study. We will ask questions about you or your child's health and medical conditions. A survey may be mailed to you or your child to be completed, and this may take about 20 minutes to complete. If eligible for the study, you or your child will be invited to a SEARCH center where he or she will undergo a physical exam, special tests and interviews. The tests involve measurement of blood pressure and anthropometrics (height, weight, and waist circumference) and collection of blood and urine samples. This visit is usually done in the morning and may take about 2 hours. We will gladly work around your schedule. There will also be interviews about you or your child's health and related habits; SEARCH uses modern techniques for the tests and interviewing. After the visit, we will contact you or your child in approximately one year to check on your child's health status.
We will send you or your child (and your child's doctor, if you wish) results from you or your child's medical tests that might be valuable to his or her health. All these results will be provided free of charge. A small gift will be provided for your time and effort for coming in to the SEARCH visit and for completing a mailed questionnaire.
Can I participate in other studies if I participate in this one?
Yes; participation in other studies will not exclude you from participating in SEARCH.
