Areas of Research

The Health Services and Economics Branch (HSEB) examines the dissemination of effective cancer-related health services into community practice. We monitor demographic, social, economic, and health system factors that influence preventive, screening, diagnostic, and treatment services for cancer. We also evaluate, develop, and disseminate data resources, survey and measurement techniques, and analytical methods with the goal of improving the quality of research in this field.

In our research, HSEB staff and collaborators are examining a number of key questions, including:

  • What factors influence levels of use of cancer-related health services?
  • How do these factors vary over time, geographically, by characteristics of health care delivery systems and among population subgroups?
  • What is the best way to measure the economic and quality-of-life burden of cancer at the national level?
  • What factors contribute toward the effective and economically efficient delivery of cancer-related health services at the community level?
