- About HIV/AIDS Information from NLM
- A comprehensive AIDS information service is vital to enable people to combat the AIDS epidemic. Scientists, physicians, educators, and other health professionals need rapid access to the latest information on AIDS research, diagnosis, treatment, control, and prevention. Consumers require similar access to appropriate information for decision-making about their behavioral choices and treatment. Community-based organizations, clinics and other types of service providers also need access to high quality, accurate and timely information for their staff and clients. The National Library of Medicine (NLM), the world's largest medical library, has been developing AIDS information services since the AIDS crisis began in 1980.
- MEDLINE
- MEDLINE is the National Library of Medicine's premier bibliographic database covering the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, and the preclinical sciences. AIDS on MEDLINE provides access to journal citations related to HIV and AIDS in a special subset of MEDLINE. Your literature search will automatically be limited to the AIDS subset. The subset contains references to journal articles published since 1980; over 50 percent of these references have abstracts. In addition to journal articles, this subset includes citations to HIV/AIDS-related newsletters. Approximately 1,000 new citations are added each month.
- NLM Gateway
- The NLM Gateway provides a single address that enables the user to retrieve information from several NLM resources including MEDLINE, Locatorplus (the online catalog of books and audiovisuals) and meeting abstracts. Abstracts are included from the Fifth through the Thirteenth International Conferences on AIDS, the Symposium on Non-Human Primate Models for AIDS, the Annual Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology, and others.
- AIDSinfo
- AIDSinfo provides online access to current
information on clinical trials of drugs and
vaccines being tested against AIDS, HIV
infection, and AIDS-related opportunistic
infections. The information about the
NIH-sponsored trials is supplied by the
National Institute of Allergy and Infectious
Diseases (NIAID); the information about the
privately sponsored trials is furnished by the
Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
AIDSinfo Clinical Trials provides information about AIDS-related clinical trials including a description of the purpose of the trial, eligibility criteria, contact persons, agents being tested, and trial locations.
AIDSinfo Drugs contains information about each of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved anti-HIV (antiretroviral) medications. Click on this category to locate drug-specific information such as side effects and interactions with food or other drugs. Links to literature citations and clinical trials are provided for each of the FDA-approved medications. You will also find links to specific sections of the DHHS guidelines that pertain to a particular drug. The AIDSinfo Drug Database is available under this category. This database contains HIV/AIDS drug fact sheets describing the drug’s use, pharmacology, toxicity, and other information. The database contains both FDA-approved and investigational drugs. There are three versions of each fact sheet: patient, health professional, and Spanish.
AIDSinfo also provides access to federally approved treatment guidelines and recommendations. The most current versions of the documents as well as an archive of earlier versions are available online. Voice access to reference specialists who will provide assistance with treatment information and treatment guidelines is available at 1-800-HIV-0440 (1-800-448-0440).
- History of Medicine Division
- The Library's History of Medicine Division actively collects pictorial information related to AIDS. These are available in an online database, Images from the History of Medicine (search on "acquired immunodeficiency syndrome"). This resource includes nearly 60,000 images of all types.
- Additional NLM Resources
- NLM also provides access to a wide variety of selected and reviewed links to additional resources, both for consumers and health professionals. These links include MedlinePlus and MedlinePlus en Español for consumer health information, Genbank for DNA and amino acid sequences and over 50,000 HIV sequences, government and non-profit agencies, and training materials.
