The NTP has amassed a significant database of results collected on toxicity studies. To follow changes in the biology of our test species and also as an additional way to evaluate test results, an historical summary of the observations made on the untreated or control groups from individual studies is maintained.
The "Historical Controls" lists the observations/incidence of control animals by route of exposure and the types of vehicle. In addition, in 1995 the NTP incorporated a new diet (NTP-2000) that contains less protein and more fiber than the NIH-07 diet used previously in the toxicity/carcinogenicity studies. Therefore the historical control data for those studies are maintained separately based on the diet the animals received. The historical controls for the genetically modified models are also in a separate list.
