Agent Name Perchloryl fluoride
CAS Number 7616-94-6
Formula Cl-F-O3
Major Category Toxic Gases & Vapors
Synonyms Chlorine fluoride oxide; Chlorine fluoride oxide (ClO3F); Chlorine oxyfluoride; Chloryl (per-)fluoride; Perchloryl fluoride; [ChemIDplus] UN3083
Category Oxidizers
Description Colorless gas with a characteristic, sweet odor. [Note: Shipped as a liquefied compressed gas.]; [NIOSH]
Sources/Uses Used as "a fluorinating agent in chemical syntheses and as a liquid oxidant in rocket fuels." [ACGIH]
Comments In acute animal studies, methemoglobinemia, as high as 71%, is the prominent effect from exposure to the vapor. In subchronic inhalation studies, methemoglobinemia, fluorosis, liver and kidney injury, and pulmonary edema are observed. Listed in the table "Examples of Industrial Chemicals for Which Methemoglobin Formation is NOT the Principal Cause of Toxicity"; [ACGIH] Possible frostbite from contact with liquid; [NIOSH] May cause respiratory tract irritation and pulmonary edema; Can induce methemoglobinemia; May cause fluorosis; [ICSC]
Exposure Assessment
Skin Designation (ACGIH) No
TIH Yes
TLV (ACGIH) 3 ppm
STEL (ACGIH) 6 ppm
PEL (OSHA) 3 ppm
IDLH (NIOSH) 100 ppm
Excerpts from Documentation for IDLHs "Dogs, rats, and mice exposed to perchloryl fluoride vapor developed methemoglobinemia. Dogs exposed to the vapor at 220 to 450 ppm for 4 hours and at 620 ppm for 2.5 hours were cyanotic and hyperpneic; methemoglobin values ranged from 29% to 71%. In dogs that died due to inhaled perchloryl fluoride, there were areas of pigment deposition in the liver, spleen, and bone marrow; areas of alveolar hemorrhage, alveolar collapse, and emphysema were also noted." [ACGIH] ?NIOSH vs ACGIH
Odor Threshold Low 10 ppm
Lethal Concentration LC50 (rats) = 385 ppm/4H
