Agent Name 1,2,3-Trichloropropane
CAS Number 96-18-4
Formula C3-H5-Cl3
Major Category Solvents
Synonyms 1,2,3-Trichloropropane; Allyl trichloride; Glycerol trichlorohydrin; Glyceryl trichlorohydrin; Trichlorohydrin; Trichloropropane; [ChemIDplus] UN2810
Category Chlorinated Aliphatic
Description Colorless liquid with a chloroform-like odor; [NIOSH]
Sources/Uses Used as a curing agent for polysulfides and a chemical intermediate; [ACGIH] Used as a degreaser, paint remover, and solvent for resins, waxes, and oils; [HSDB]
Comments Exposure at 500 ppm for four hours induces elevated liver enzymes in rats and mice. Workers complained of unpleasant odor and irritation of the eyes and throat at 100 ppm. [ACGIH] A skin, eye, and respiratory tract irritant; May cause liver and kidney injury; Inhalation of high concentrations can cause CNS depression; [ICSC]
Exposure Assessment
Skin Designation (ACGIH) Yes
TLV (ACGIH) 10 ppm
PEL (OSHA) 50 ppm
IDLH (NIOSH) 100 ppm
Excerpts from Documentation for IDLHs It has been reported that objectionable ocular and mucosal irritation were experienced after 15 minutes of exposure to 100 ppm [Silverman et al. 1946].
Vapor Pressure 3 mm Hg
Odor Threshold Low 100 ppm
Lethal Concentration LCLo (rats) = 500 ppm/4H
Explanatory Notes Odor threshold from "Quick Guide: The Electronic NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards"; Flash point = 180 deg F;
