CIS Regional Programs

Partnerships That Make a Difference

The Cancer Information Service (CIS) is a national resource for information and education about cancer and a leader in translating cancer information into terms the public can easily understand. The CIS is a program of the National Cancer Institute, the Nation's primary agency for cancer research. Since 1976, the CIS has been the source for the latest, most accurate cancer information for patients and their families, the general public, and health professionals. Through regional offices located nationwide, the CIS serves all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Through its Partnership Program, the Cancer Information Service reaches the medically underserved, including minority groups and people with limited access to health information and services, with cancer information. To effectively reach as many people as possible, the CIS partners with state and regional organizations that directly serve these populations. By pooling resources toward common goals, the CIS and its partners leverage resources and design programs with wider reach. The CIS can assist state and regional organizations by providing:

  • public and professional education resources from the National Cancer Institute, including Spanish-language, easy-to-read, and culturally appropriate materials
  • promotion of our toll-free telephone service (1-800-4-CANCER) and our online information service (LiveHelp) in partner materials

Cancer Education Program Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation

  • state and regional cancer statistics
  • review of materials for accuracy and audience appropriateness
  • suggestions for making the most of limited resources

Cancer Resources and Experts

  • state and regional cancer education programs
  • regional cancer centers
  • voluntary health and advocacy organizations
  • cancer experts

Coalition Building and Networking

Working together, the CIS and its partners across the country reach those most in need with cancer information and services. State and regional organizations can learn more about collaborating with the CIS by calling the Cancer Information Service at 1-800-4-CANCER or visiting the National Cancer Institute's Web site at http://www.cancer.gov (search for Cancer Information Service).
