  • Orientation and Workshop: Postbac Orientation and Networking Workshop
    Description: Join the staff of the Office of Intramural Training & Education (OITE) and the Postbac Committee for Winter Orientation. This is a chance for postbac trainees to meet the OITE staff and learn about the resources and activities that can enrich their NIH experience. If you have been to a Postbac orientation before, we encourage you to drop by at 11:30 a.m. Dr. Milgram will be talking about the importance of networking and how to develop your own professional network. Postbac IRTAs/CRTAs, Technical IRTAs, UGSP Scholars, and members of the NIH Academy are all welcome.

  • Workshop: Preparing for the MCAT
    Description: Dr. William Higgins, OITE Pre-Professional/Pre-Graduate Advisor will discuss the best approaches to preparing and studying for the MCAT. This session will include:
    • Review of specific types of questions
    • Strategies for attacking the different sections
    • How to study
    • How do I know what to study?
    • Test Day strategies: "Do"s, "Don't"s, and a checklist
    • Test Day procedures

  • Lecture: Postbac Lecture — "Cell and Gene Therapy for Patients with Cancer"
    Description: The Postbac lecture series features NIH intramural scientists speaking about the cutting-edge research in their laboratories and the contributions made by their trainees.

  • Workshop: Speaking Up: How to Ask for What You Need in the Lab and in Life
    Description:
    • Do you have a suggestion for improving efficiency in your lab but lack the confidence to bring it to the attention of your PI?
    • Do you need additional resources for your experiments or time off for an important family activity but don't know how to ask?
    • Are you afraid to mention the fact that you are having major difficulty dealing with one of your lab mates?
    Join an experienced career counselor from the OITE Career Services Center to explore strategies for communicating your needs in a variety of situations. Learn how to be more assertive, to speak up for yourself, and how to decide when to speak up and when not to.
    Format: Seminar and small-group discussion, limited to 20 participants
    Target audience: Postdoctoral fellows and graduate students at the Bethesda campus
    Speaker: Anne Kirchgessner, Career Counselor, OITE. This workshop will not be recorded, but handout materials will be available online after the workshop.
    Date/Time/Location: February 24 (Tuesday), 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., Building 45 (Natcher), Room G-1. Optional follow-up brown bag lunch discussion: March 3 (Tuesday), 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., location to be determined.

  • Workshop: Scientists Teaching Science
    Description: Are you interested in learning the basics of successful teaching? Are you considering a career in education?

    If you answered yes to either of these questions you should sign up for the OITE workshop, "Scientists Teaching Science: An Introduction to Best Practices in Science Education." The workshop will provide a basic introduction for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows interested in understanding the basics of learning styles, teaching philosophies, and course development. This workshop is a prerequisite for admission to the in-depth pedagogy course the OITE will also offer.

    Speaker: Barbara Houtz, a nationally-recognized teacher with over 13 years' experience in training teachers
    Date/Time/Location: All sessions for winter 2008 have been filled. Watch for new sessions in spring 2009.

  • Career Advancement Toolkit Workshops
    The OITE has planned a variety of workshops for current trainees to prepare them for their career path. Intensive workshops in three areas are planned over the 2008-2009 academic year. The Career Advancement Toolkit consists of three tracks:
    1. Career Decisions 101
    2. Academic Job Search
    3. Industry Job Search
    Please read about all three and register for the one(s) that will best meet your needs.


  • Orientation for Postdoctoral Fellows and Graduate Students
    Just arrived at the NIH? Wondering how to make the most of your time here? Want to set goals and establish expectations with your mentor? Trying to figure out how to navigate NIH resources? Interested in becoming a part of the NIH trainee community?

    If you answered yes to any of these questions, please join the OITE staff and other trainees at Orientation. We will discuss getting to know the NIH, skills for success, career and professional development opportunities, and more.

    Orientations run year-round on the first Tuesday of every month from 8:30-10:00 a.m.

  • Writing Workshops
    The OITE has planned a variety of writing workshops for current trainees. Please read about all three and register for the one(s) that will best meet your needs.

  • Recurrent Event: Wednesday Afternoon Lecture Series (WALS)
    Description: The WALS is intended to keep you abreast of cutting-edge research from beyond the gates of the NIH. For the 2008-2009 lecture series, your intramural colleagues nominated nearly 150 well-regarded researchers for only 42 slots.
    Date/Time/Location: Wednesdays, 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., Masur Auditorium, Building 10, unless otherwise noted.
    Postdoctoral and Visiting Fellows, Clinical Fellows, and Graduate Students are invited to join the WALS speaker for lunch at noon in Room 2W15, Building 2. Check the WALS schedule and register for lunch.
