Dysphagia Research Study

Effects of Intramuscular Stimulation on Swallowing in Dysphagia

We are studying whether stimulation of muscles involved in swallowing can help those with chronic swallowing disorders (dysphagia).

For this outpatient research study, the muscles used for swallowing will be stimulated electrically through wires inserted into the muscles or through the skin. Swallowing movements will be examined by laryngoscopy and fluoroscopy.

Study procedures take 2-3 hours over 2-3 days.

The study is being conducted at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland; all costs for the study are paid for by NIH. Travel and lodging costs are supported by the NIH.
