This page lists some applications of GIS technology by parts of the US federal government.
- Enterprise Geographic Information System -
an enterprise GIS system for the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) by the Environmental
Systems Research Institute (ESRI).
- TOXMAP -
a pilot project developed at the National Library of Medicine that
creates nationwide or local area maps showing where chemicals are released
into the air, water and ground. It provides access to relevant chemical
information and provides region-specific links to chemical and bibliographic
information.
- Mapping & Analysis for Public Safety (MAPS) -
a National Institute of Justice (NIJ) program to promote research, evaluation, development, and
dissemination of GIS technology for criminal justice research and practice.
- Satellite Images of Mali Villages -
A team of National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) researchers used satellite images
of two villages in Mali to help them decide where to
place sand fly traps part of an effort to control leishmaniasis.

trends among adults in the United States.
- Interactive Atlas of Reproductive Health -
a Web-based interactive geographic information system (GIS) dedicated to reproductive health issues such
as infant mortality, fertility, and low birth weight.
- Geographic Analysis Tool for Health & Environmental Research (GATHER) -
an online spatial data access system that provides members of the public health community and
general public access to spatial data that is pertinent to the analysis and exploration of public
health issues.

- Federal Geographic Data Committee -
an interagency committee which is developing the National Spatial Data Infrastructure.
- National Spatial Data Infrastructure -
defined as the technologies, policies, and people necessary to promote sharing of
geospatial data throughout all levels of government, the private and non-profit sectors,
and the academic community.
- National Geospatial Data Clearinghouse -
a searchable collection of over 250 spatial data servers
containing digital geographic data primarily for use in GIS,
image processing systems, and other modelling software.
