 CERHR Evaluation Process

The following steps give an overview of the CERHR chemical evaluation process in chronological order.  Please see the Introduction section on the About CERHR web page for a more detailed description of the CERHR chemical evaluation process.

1)  A chemical is nominated.
2)  The CERHR staff performs a preliminary literature search on the chemical.
3)  The CERHR Core Committee reviews this information and recommends chemicals for dossier (summary) preparation. 
4)  The CERHR staff scientists prepare a dossier of the current scientific information on the chemical.
5)  The Core Committee reviews dossiers for priority setting and recommends chemicals for evaluation to Associate Director, NTP.
6)  Federal Register notice announces selected chemical(s) and solicits public comments, chemical information, and nominations of scientists qualified to serve on the expert panel .
7)  Public comments are reviewed by the CERHR staff.
8)  Core Committee recommends expert panel members and to Associate Director, NTP, for final approval.
9) The Expert Panel develops a Draft Expert Panel Report.
10)  Federal Register notice requests public comments on the draft report; announces expert panel meeting, panel membership and requests public comments to be made at this meeting.
11) Public comments on the Draft Report are reviewed by the CERHR staff and expert panel members.
12)  At the expert panel meeting, the panel completes the expert panel report.
13)  Federal Register notice requests public comments on the expert panel report.
14) CERHR and NTP staff prepare NTP Brief and compile NTP-CERHR Monograph.
