Questions
and Answers
How do I complete
the BPC admissions process?
All applicants must complete
the admissions application and submit the $25.00 application
fee. Freshmen must submit an official high school transcript
and official SAT or ACT scores. Transfer students with less
than thirty transferable hours must meet the freshmen admissions
requirements and also submit all official college transcripts.
Transfer students with more than thirty semester hours are
only required to submit official transcripts from all colleges
attended. Although we operate on a rolling admissions basis,
you are strongly encouraged to apply early because campus
housing, scholarships, and some forms for financial aid
are contingent upon your acceptance and do have much earlier
deadlines.
What do I do if I am undecided
about my major?
Not knowing what you want to
major in right away is nothing to worry about. There is
a Counseling and Career Center on campus to help you choose
what is best for you. You’ll have plenty of time to
take some of your basic core classes before having to declare
a major.
What types of financial
aid are available at BPC and how do I apply for them?
Types of financial aid include
grants, HOPE scholarships, the Georgia Baptist Scholarships,
endowed scholarships, various BPC scholarships, and federal
loans. The first step to apply for financial aid is to obtain
the BPC Financial Aid packet and begin filling out required
forms as soon as possible. The most important form is the
Free Application for Federal Student Aid form (FAFSA), which
may be completed after January 1 of the year you are planning
to enroll. You may complete it on line at www.fafsa.ed.gov
or pick it up from your high school counselor or from the
BPC financial aid office.
On campus housing, what’s
available? How do I apply?
Once you have been accepted
to BPC, you will receive a housing form in the mail. Once
submitted, a spot will be reserved for you in one of our
residence halls. The earlier you submit the housing form,
the better your chances are to receive the residence hall
of your choice. All the halls are air-conditioned and are
already set up for local telephone service, cable television,
and the Internet.
What steps does BPC take
to make sure the campus is safe?
Crime on campus is practically
obsolete since BPC’s inception. However, we do take
precautions to ensure the safety of our campus. We provide
security for the campus seven days a week. All buildings
are checked and locked before curfew. All our crime statistics
are filed with the U.S. Department of Education. Crime statistics
for more than 600 U.S. colleges, universities have to be
posted at http://ope.ed.gov/security. We also have Resident
Directors and Resident Assistants that are trained to assist
with the safety in our residence halls.
What happens if I get sick
while at BPC?
We have an infirmary on campus,
which has a full time physician, a physician assistant and
nurses on staff. We do require that students have insurance
or purchase it from the school when they begin. As a result,
all routine visits to the infirmary are free.
Hungry? Where to eat.
We have a traditional residence-dining
hall that serves all-you-can-eat buffet style meals. The
menu changes daily but always has a lot of variety. Our
upstairs café has made-to-order items such as burgers,
chicken sandwiches, pizza, fries and other snacks. When
you buy a 19-meal plan, you will not run out of meals to
use in the residence-dining hall for the entire semester.
As part of your meal plan, you also get flex dollars that
you can spend in the upstairs café each semester.
What about transportation?
May freshmen have cars on campus?
Getting around campus will
be one of the last things you’ll worry about at BPC.
Our campus is fairly compact so students can easily walk
from one classroom building to another in the allotted time
in between classes. Everything on campus is a short walk
from the residence halls. However, freshmen are allowed
to have cars on campus. Students may pick up a parking decal
from the student affairs office at the beginning of the
semester.
What kinds of computing
facilities are available? Should I bring my own computer
to my dorm room?
Students may bring their own
computers for their residence hall rooms. All of the Residence
halls have access to the Internet. However, if you choose
not to bring your own computer, there are four centrally
located computer labs on campus, which house brand new state
of the art Gateway computers. E-mail accounts and Internet
use are free.
What can I expect a BPC
freshman class to be like?
A typical size of a freshmen
class will probably remind you a lot of your high school
classes. We don’t have lecture-style classrooms with
hundreds of students. A freshman class has approximately
twenty students; however, once students begin taking their
major area classes, they will encounter even smaller classes.
About seventy percent of our faculty hold a doctorate or
terminal degree in their field of study.
What is the city of Mount
Vernon like?
Mount Vernon is a peaceful
rural town located about ninety miles from both Savannah
and Macon. It is only ten minutes away from Vidalia, which
has many of the conveniences students are used to in their
hometowns. Vidalia has several shopping centers including
a Super Wal-Mart, a movie theater, a bowling alley, and
an abundance of restaurants.
